Prof. George C. Zalidis

Aristotle University of Thessaloniki

George Zalidis is a graduate of the Department of Agriculture at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with a doctorate degree from the Department of Soil Science and a post-doctoral degree from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University.

He is Emeritus Professor of the Laboratory of Remote Sensing, Spectroscopy and Geographic Information Systems, a member of the Laboratory of Applied Soil Science and of Pollution and Soil Degradation in the Department of Agriculture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has also served as Director of the Interbalkan Environment Center (i-BEC) since 2007. In the respective administrative positions he has held to date, he has applied certified quality management standards with quantified administrative results.

His research interests focus on the use of Earth Observation (EO) data to produce corresponding EO services in the GEO Social Benefits Areas and Sustainable Development Goals, implemented with standardized GEO-compatible methodologies globally, regionally, and locally. His EO research activity includes the use of spectral data in monitoring agricultural and natural ecosystems, using the NEXUS approach for their management and restoration.

In addition, his research interests cover the field of the circular economy, through the development of carbon footprint protocols in primary production, composting, and micro- and macroalgal cultivation.

His engagement with quality assurance protocols in academia, research, and know-how transfer organizations, across all administrative positions served nationally and internationally—including Higher Education Quality Assurance Accreditation—has provided him with extensive quality management skills and experience in directing and managing related institutions and organizations.

He has served as an expert and national representative, as well as a member of international committees and councils, and has also been an affiliated professor at U.S. universities. His vision is to bring together researchers, policymakers, public institutions, and SMEs to exchange know-how and experience regionally and globally, strengthening economies and competitiveness, providing solutions to administrations and institutions, and ensuring sustainability and post-project support through quality management.

He has published more than 130 research articles in peer-reviewed journals, with 5,576 citations, an h-index of 43, and an i-index of 90 (source: Google Scholar), as well as 3,613 citations and an h-index of 32 (source: Scopus). He has delivered more than 80 oral presentations at conferences, serving as coordinator or invited speaker at 14 of them, and has contributed to numerous studies and technical reports.

He has coordinated more than 150 research projects and serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific journals. He has also supervised more than 10 doctoral theses at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Michigan State University.
